July 27, 2008: Claude Gasio of Fresno, CA. A cook aboard the USS Kalinin Bay,
a destroyer escort carrier, Claude earned a Purple Heart in a sea battle off the
coast of Samar in the Philippine Sea in October 1944, a battle captured in
James Hornfischer's acclaimed book, The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.
Claude has been very active in helping fellow veterans through the Military
Order of the Purple Heart.
